I, Tonya is a true story which seems to have sprung out from the world of Fargo. Centred on the infamous American figure skater Tonya Harding (played by Margot Robbie), the film follows her rise to fame and the toll an athlete career takes. The grotesque lengths to which Harding goes to eliminate her competition are balanced by the unashamed crudeness of the zany characters surrounding Harding, especially her mom (played by Allison Janney) and ex-husband (played by Sebastian Stan). Based in the 1990s, this mix of comedy and drama never makes fun of its main characters, who have been sensationalised in the press, but instead focuses on the struggles endured. I, Tonya considers how some incredibly hasty decisions were blown out of proportion and seriously impacted Harding’s sports career. Craig Gillespie’s raunchy take on this stranger-than-fiction story makes this one of the best comedies of the year.
